Travelling by airplane
Arriving via Airport Nuremberg
The international airport nearest to the convention hotel is Nuremberg airport. This airport, however, is still roughly 160 km away from the convention itself, and you will be required to travel to the convention site on local trains. We recommend Nuremberg airport for visitors flying from the UK and Continental Europe, as it is served by low-cost carriers, for example Air Berlin. Travel from Nuremberg airport to the central railway station will take about 20 minutes by subway, there is a bi-hourly connection to Suhl from Nuremberg central station.
For travel information (with pre-set departure and arrival stations) we recommend using this search form provided by Deutsche Bahn, which will also allow you to purchase tickets for the railway journey up to 89 days in advance.
Arriving via Frankfurt InternationalShould you arrive from outside Europe, you should check with your travel agent whether flying directly into Nuremberg or Frankfurt International is more convenient for you. A return ticket from Frankfurt, Germany's main air hub, to the convention site is about € 120 per person, and it will take about 3.5 hours to travel from the airport to the convention. However, if you still want to travel to the convention from Frankfurt despite the disadvantages, we recommend using this search form provided by Deutsche Bahn to retrieve further railway information and ticket pricing. (Railway tickets can be booked up to 89 days in advance).
Travelling by train
Suhl is located in the centre of Germany, but unfortunately not very close to long-distance train services, so you will most likely have to change to a regional service at some point. There are several services available, some of them require additional changes, some of them are through services from Würzburg to Suhl. If you're travelling rom outside of Germany, wou will likely end up on a long-distance train to Leipzig or Eisenach, and then one of the regional services from either of these cities to Suhl.
To facilitate the search for connections, we've prepared this search form which will find a train connection for you directly from the database of Deutsche Bahn. It has the following presets:
- Arrival time Aug 26 2009, 14:00 CET
- Arriving at: Suhl station
You can just enter your station of departure (within Continental Europe and the UK) and search for a connection that fits your planned itinerary. If you are in possession of a valid credit card, it is possible to obtain domestic and selected international self-print tickets right at the web site up to 89 days in advance.
Travelling by car
Suhl is conveniently located near the A71 and A73 motorways.
Please take note that these motorways were built relatively recent, and might not
be included in maps published prior to 2005. The A71 is the main connection to
Suhl, providing links to the cross-country routes A4 (near Gotha) and A7 (near
Schweinfurt).
Coming from the north
Take A7 up to Kirchheimer Dreieck (exit 86). Change on A4 direction
Eisenach/Erfurt. At Kreuz Erfurt (exit 45), change onto A71 direction
Suhl.
Coming from the south
Take A7 to Kreuz Schweinfurt (exit 99) and change to
A70. After a few kilometres, leave the A70 at Dreieck Werntal
(exit 4) and merge onto A71 direction Suhl.
Coming from the east
From Berlin, take A9 unto Hermsdorfer Kreuz. Merge onto A4
direction Erfurt/Eisenach. From Dresden, just stay on A4 until you reach
Kreuz Erfurt (exit 45). Change onto A71 there, heading
toward Suhl.
Coming from the west
From southwestern Germany and France, the best way is to travel to Frankfurt am Main first, then get on the A5 northbound. The A5 will eventually become A4 at the junction Kirchheimer Dreieck.
If you are travelling from the Netherlands, Düsseldorf or Cologne, follow
A3 until Limburg an der Lahn, leave the A3 at exit 42, then use
the B49 to reach Gießen and the motorway ring around Gießen (A485
and A480) to reach the A5. Coming from Dortmund, you can use the A45
(Sauerlandlinie) to get to Gießen without the fuss.
Once you have
reached the junction Kirchheimer Dreieck, please follow the instructions
as laid out in the segment "coming from the north" above.
Common to all routes
Leave A71 at exit Suhl/Zella-Mehlis (exit number
19). Head southwards on B247 toward Suhl city
centre for about 1.5 kilometres. Turn left onto Ilmenauer Straße, direction
Schmiedefeld and follow the road uphill.
After a while, the road will start a steep incline - which means you're
almost there! The hotel will be located to the left of the main road, about
200 metres after you pass the second serpentine.
When using a navigation system
The hotel address is ambiguous, there are two streets in the area with the same name and the same postal code. Most navigation systems won't find the hotel. Try entering "Am Himmelreich" instead. Upon reaching that road, don't enter it, but continue going uphill.
Ride sharing
If you don't like going by train and do not want to rent a car by yourself, it may be a good idea to have a look at the ridesharing board to see if anyone is travelling when you are, or post a request yourself.
