THE LOCATION

The Youth Hostel "Oberbernhards" lies at the foot of the 835m high mountain called "Milseburg" in the middle of the nature preservation area "Hessische Rhön", about 40km east of Fulda, Germany. The youth hostel is pretty far away from any civilization, and lies in the middle of a very beautiful landscape of fields and forests.

ABOUT THE YOUTH HOSTEL

While it's not quite as fancy as the castle we had rented last year, this year's location still has many advantages apart from the nice scenery. We will have significantly more function space than last year, so it will not be quite as crowded.

We have one really large dining hall, surrounded by several neat terraces, two smaller dining rooms, a "teacher's room" a.k.a Sponsor's Lounge. We also have a large concert hall, another hall that has collapsible walls enabling us to use the entire entrance hall as one big room, four rooms in the cellar with tables (two of them with open fireplaces), and three conference rooms.

There are beds for about 300 furries, and camping is possible outside. Rooms have balconies, between 2 and 8 beds each, and most of them have showers and toilets.

Outside, there is a total of 15000 square meters of greenery belonging to the youth hostel, and a large fireplace for campfires. We'll have two large gas grills which we can use to make a barbecue for lots of furries, with shorter waiting lines than last year.

The site is easily reachable by car, and there is plenty of parking space along the road. For those who come by train, we will arrange a shuttle service from Fulda.

Unfortunately, the site is not very wheelchair-friendly, except one room which is at ground level, and specifically equipped for the handicapped. We are sorry, but dogs and other pets will not be allowed inside the youth hostel.

VIDEOS

You've probably already clicked on one of the photos in the box on the right side of this page. We have also made some video clips to give you a more three-dimensional impression of the place. You'll need the DivX codec to view them.

HOW TO GET THERE

ADDRESS

Jugendherberge Oberbernhards
Inh. Michael Auth
Oberbernhards 5
36115 Oberbernhards-Hilders

IF YOU'RE COMING BY CAR

You'll have to approach the City of Fulda using the Autobahn A7 no matter if you're coming from the north or the south. Take exit "Fulda Nord", which leads you to the B27. Follow the B27 south, until it intersects the B458. Turn left, and follow the B458 for about 30 kilometers. Then pull left onto the B278 which will lead you to Hilders.

Be careful! There are two youth hostels in the vicinity of Hilders. The one you want is the "Jugendherberge Oberbernhards" and NOT the "Jugendherberge Hilders".

Drive through Hilders. You'll pass a yellow end of town sign, which says "Lahrbach 6km". Ignore it. Watch out for a signpost pointing left to "Hünfeld 25km". Follow it. Watch out for another signpost pointing left to "Kleinsassen". Follow that one, too. Now, the road goes on for quite a while, through lots of nice scenery and little villages. At some time, there'll be another signpost pointing left which says "Jugendherberge" and "Oberbernhards". There you go! Next there's a t-junction. Don't turn left. Go straight on until you see a cross on the left side. Turn left once more after you've passed it. The youth hostel is now on your left side.

In case you've never been in Germany before: The "B" is for "Bundesstraße", and they're marked with yellow signs. The "A" is for "Autobahn", and they're marked with blue signs.

IF YOU'RE COMING BY TRAIN

The nearest DB (German railway company) train station is "Fulda". Click here (English Language) or here (German Language) to find out what your best connection to Fulda is. There is no way you can get from Fulda to the Con Site, except for the Eurofurence Shuttle Service or calling an expensive Taxi. A bus line will take you pretty close to the con site, but it runs only every two hours, and still doesn't come close enough. We STRONGLY recommend our shuttle service.

Please send us an email and tell us in advance if you need to be picked up, and when you are going to arrive. Write down this mobile phone number: +49-179- 3955744. Through this number you will reach our shuttle service coordinator. The number will NOT be active until one day before the convention. You can call this number if your train is late or things run differently than you thought. Write us an email as soon as you know when your train is going to arrive and when your train back home is going to leave.

Please keep in mind that the DB updates their timetable twice a year. The next update is scheduled for June. Don't forget to check if any of your train connections are affected!

IF YOU'RE COMING BY AIRPLANE

There is no large airport near the con site. If you're flying within Europe, try to get a flight to Frankfurt/Main, and continue your trip by train from there. This is the easiest and shortest way. See above for instructions how to find the right train connections.

INTERCONTINENTAL FLIGHTS

If you're planning to visit Eurofurence from overseas, you'll probably be very limited in the choice of your destination airport. If possible, you should try to get a flight to Frankfurt/Main. If you are unsure, take a map and see which airport lies closest. (You can use the online routefinder on this page, and use the Tools/Distance function). Short-distance flights within Germany usually don't pay off.

In any case: Take your time, don't rush things. If you can, schedule your arrival in Germany one or two days before the con begins. Jetlag is going to hit you like a hammer, and you will be exhausted from the flight. We recommend that you get a hotel room at your flight destination, and recover from the trip, and then take an early train to Fulda on Thursday. The convention starts in the afternoon, and it's more fun to arrive early and relaxed rather than in the middle of the night and dead tired. The train ride will take at least one hour, depending on where you landed. If you plan to take Melatonin to fight the jetlag, bring it with you, since you won't get it in Germany without a prescription.

Your travel agency should be able to look up a train connection to Fulda for you. Of course you can directly consult the official DB search engine and ticket service. They sell tickets internationally. However, we believe booking the tickets through your local travel agency will be safer. If you need any help, don't hesitate to contact us.
