Welcome to our little guided tour. These first three photos have been scanned from postcards, and they're showing the Freusburg (which roughly translates to "Freus Castle") as if we were approaching it in a helicopter. The castle is set atop the highest hill in the area, near the very small city of "Kirchen", which lies about 30 kilometers west of Siegen, and about 90 kilometers east of Cologne.
As you can see on this photo, the castle consists of three segments. One is 950 years old, one is 450 years old, and the newest part has been added about 20 years ago. The castle, while preserving its atmosphere and structure, has been completely restored and modernized to become a youth hostel in 1986.
The modern wing of the building contains enough sleeping rooms for about 220 persons. The modernized part is mostly wheelchair-friendly, and sports an elevator. On the next few pages, we will take you on a little walk through the location, and on our way, we will explain all the important features. You can always click on one of the photos on the left to take a closer look.
